SBMA Fire Department launches fire safety ‘fun run’

In observance of the National Fire Prevention Month in March, the Fire Department of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) will promote fire safety awareness the healthy and active way – through a “fun run”.

Dubbed as “Run for Fire Safety 2011: Go! Go! Go!” the first edition of the SBMA Fire Department Fun Run will be held on March 19, around the Subic Bay Freeport, said SBMA fire chief Ranny Magno.

“Fire safety is very important as we need to raise the consciousness of Subic stakeholders on the precautions, alertness and actions that we take to prevent or reduce the likelihood of a fire that may result in death, injury or damage to property,” Magno said.

“This is why the fun run is open to all SBMA employees, Freeport locators, and running enthusiasts, so we can involve more people in raising awareness on fire safety and prevention,” he added.

Runners may join in the 3-kilometer, 5-kilometer, or 10-kilometer distance category, Magno also said.

Aside from promoting fire safety, the activity will raise funds for the purchase of permanent fire safety markers bearing fire prevention messages and slogans to be installed within the Subic Freeport.

This will be sourced from the P50 entrance fee that will be collected from all participants in the fun run, Magno said.

“The fun run would also help promote health awareness because running or jogging is known to be effective in reducing body weight, slowing down the aging process, and fighting diseases and disorders,” he added.

Meanwhile, SBMA fire officer and race organizer Raul Zapanta said that at least 5,000 participants from various sectors and organizations in Olongapo City, Zambales and the Subic Freeport are expected to join the 1st SBMA Fire Department Fun Run.

Among the groups expected to participate are the Philippine Red Cross, Olongapo-KHG Rescue Team, SBMA employees, free port workers, and students from various schools in Olongapo and Subic Freeport.

Interested runners may join the race by submitting a filled-up registration form on or before March 8, 2011 to the SBMA Fire Department. Inquiries will be entertained at telephone number (047)252-4227. Please ask for Michell Madriaga.(SBMA-PRD/AMV/PIA Zambales)
