KALAMPAJAM 2010: ON ITS 3RD YEAR, A SUCCESS!

This year’s Kalampa Jam, now on its third year is another resounding success.

Tasked by Mayor James “Bong” Gordon, Jr., Ryan Mabeza, head of the City Sports and Youth Development Office partnered with the Department of Education (DepEd) – Olongapo in facilitating the event.

Kalampa Jam is part of Mayor James “Bong” Gordon Jr.’s Anti-Firecracker Campaign in Olongapo, where the use of indigenous and/or recycled materials is encouraged to produce sound or music as alternative to firecrackers.

“Naisip natin ang ganitong klase ng pa-contest upang mapa-alalahanan ang lahat sa kasalukuyang total ban sa paputok dito sa Olongapo. Hindi natin kailangan ng firecrackers, nakakapinsala lang at nakakadumi ng ating environment, nakakasunog ng mga bahay at dapat ang pera ay gamitin natin sa mas mabuti at mas makabuluhang bagay,” Mayor Gordon said.

“I’d like to thank Mayor Bong Gordon and FL Anne Gordon for the support they have given to make this event a success,” Mabeza said.

Aside from the Music Festival, they have also conducted a poster making contest for the Secondary and College levels, the winners are the following:

Secondary level:

Aside from being fire hazards, firecrackers, according to City Ordinance No. 63 series of 2008, are known to cause bodily harm/injury and even death. Based on studies, firecrackers were proven to also cause the following:

1.) Increase in toxic fumes and gases like carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide as well as suspended particulate matter in the air; 2.) increase in noise pollution above 125 decibel (dB) which is above the tolerable limits, and can cause deafness; 3.) increase in incidents of respiratory diseases such as acute bouts of asthma and bronchitis and may also trigger heart attacks.
