OLONGAPO EYES NEED OF GUAM FOR 20,000 SKILLED WORKERS
The US-island territory of Guam is expected to hire 20,000 workers by year 2010 to 2012.
This is in connection with the imminent transfer of the US Military facilities in Okinawa, Japan to Guam in 2010 which will entail massive construction projects and provide employment prospects for Filipino workers.
Mayor James “Bong” Gordon, Jr. immediately acted on the request from Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) Administrator Jennifer Jardin-Manalili by calling for a general assembly.
An estimate of 900 former US Naval Base employees and other interested individuals attended the assembly at the Rizal Triangle Multi-Purpose Center on March 23, 2009.
POEA is requesting the assistance of Gordon in providing their office a profile and database of Olongapeños who have previous work experience in the military bases.
Prior to this, Gordon called for a coordination meeting with all concerned city officials and barangay captains in Olongapo to impart the good news and instructed everyone to consolidate a list of possible candidates for deployment.
To date, a great number of applicants and interested individuals are still rushing to the Public Employment Services Office (PESO) to inquire and be enlisted for possible employment next year.
“We are complying with the request of the POEA, but actual processing of applications for skilled workers will start around October to December 2009. The actual project will start during the first and second quarter of year 2010,” Gordon explained during the assembly.
This 15-20 billion dollar project will create employment for 20,000 to 30,000 Filipino workers on top of possible opportunities for Filipino businesses.

Filipino recruitment may not happen as the US is looking INWARD to employ workers. With the soaring American unemployment, thed priority is getting American workers employed. The Department of Defense is now planning a massive STATESIDE recruitment, specially in California, to fill the needed employees to run the expanded base, specially the Ship Repair Facility.
